A fixture of the LES, ABC No Rio supports a wide range of activities that range from art exhibits to punk shows. On the eve of its 30th anniversary, the existing structure will be torn down to make way for a new building. Taking place from May-October 2009, Hanging Out at No Rio is project that invites nine visual artists to explore the history of No Rio and the multiple communities it serves.

Rather than taking a top down view, the project encourages investigation through a series of informal barbecues and conversations. Out of these interactions, new work by participating artists will be presented in an exhibition at ABC No Rio from September 24-October 15, 2009.

Hanging Out at No Rio made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Dedalus Foundation.

    Work To Do:
    When:   Thursday, March 26, 2009 - Thursday, April 26, 2009
    Where:  The Combine NYC

The Combine, Afrika Bambaata, Endless Love Crew (ELC)"Royce" joined forces to bring you, "Work To Do". This event is a benefit to support some of Greater New York's public school art programs like, The Bronx High School of Visual Arts, The Urban Assembly School of Music and Art, The New Design High School, and The Children's Art Carnival. Thematically the show is inspired by President Obama's inauguration speech about his appeal to the nation about exemplifying selfless acts; evidently reflected in his declaration of Martin Luther King's national holiday as a day to volunteer in support of our local communities.

Afrika Bambaata and The Soulsonic Force, known for releasing "Planet Rock", have reunited. Mr. Biggs, G.L.O.B.E and Bambaata will be performing their new single titled, "Work To Do" at the show’s opening. Bambaata is the founder of the Zulu Nation, that united inner city youth from different gangs and hip-hop groups. The Soulsonic Force is made up of Mr. Biggs (Ellis Williams), Pow Wow (Robert Darrell Allen), and Emcee G.L.O.B.E. (John B. Miller).

"Work To Do" will be held at 112 Greene Street; this space was one of the first conceptual art galleries in the seventies thanks to Jeffrey Lew and Gordon-Matta Clark of 112 Workshop. The space showed artists like Joseph Beuys, Chris Burden, Philip Glass, Dennis Oppenheim, Gordon Matta-Clark, Richard Serra, Marisol, James Rosenquist to name a few. It later moved and was renamed White Columns. Then the space became the legendary Greene Street Recording Studios where many of the seminal hip hop songs were recorded. Currently, it is the permanent home of The Combine, created by Steve Loeb and John Robie for the purpose of creating an exciting new environment for the exhibition of art.

The Endless Love Crew is a collective of nine artists that work to improve the streets of New York City and beyond. The group's keystone "Celso" and "infinity" is known for organizing its live collaborative open-canvas sessions, which in a little over two years have attracted dozens of artists from all over the country and the world, including England, Japan, Norway, Brazil and Switzerland.

"Royce" is a member of the ELC crew. He was born and bread NYC artist whose infamous Monsters can be seen pasted on doors and walls throughout the five boroughs. Currently, "Royce" is the art director for Diamond Headz NYC; a new clothing line promoting the life and culture of socially conscious city kids. For more information on this event please visit the ELC website, www.endlesslovecrew.com.

    When:   Friday, August 22, 2008
    Where:  New Museum

This 2008 documentary by Jenner Furst, Dan Levin, and Ben Solomon examines the life of filmmaker, photographer, and longtime Bowery resident Clayton Patterson. Since 1979, Patterson has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City's Lower East Side. Traversing the outside edge, he's recorded a dark and colorful society, including heroin, homelessness, political chaos, and ultimately gentrification. The film will be followed by a Q & A session with Clayton Patterson, Elsa Rensaa, Jenner Furst, Dan Levin, and Ben Solomon.

CAPTURED is screened as a part of the Bowery Artist Tribute, a project celebrating artists who have lived and worked on the Bowery.

    Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto
    When:   Thursday, April 24, 2008
    Where:  Bent Festival / DCTV

Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto (title from Styx 1983 song)

Put your thick black rimmed coke bottle glasses on and mismatch color and patterned outfits and experience what is considered new media in the visual arts. Traditional medium of oil, acrylic, pastels, watercolors, collage, bronze, brass, metal, wood, and found objects have all paved the way for sound, video, digital, robotics, electronics, and interactive elements. Geeks rock!

We will be attending the opening of Bent Festival's art and music series, and meeting Mike Rosenthal of media relations. He will give us a short history about the festival and DIY culture's influence on contemporary art and music. Visual artists like, Paper Rad, neuroTransmitter, Christian Croft, Glorious Ninth, Leonel Moura, and Jowan Sebastian; bands like Artic Monkeys, Beck, Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Fischerspooner, Fugazi, and the Misfits are steadfast to the DIY ethics and morals of conduct.

The Bent Festival began as a celebration of circuit bending, but has quickly grown to embrace not only circuit benders but also artists who create instruments and artwork from scratch using homemade circuitry. Artists from around the globe perform music with their homemade or circuit bent instruments each night of the festival, teach workshops to adults and children alike, and create amazing, interactive art installations.

Bent Festival could not be held at a more a propros location. DCTV (Documentary Video and Community Media Center) was formed in 1972 to provide free media services to the community. We will also view 8 installations by Michael Dory, Lesley Flanigan and Andy Doro, Matt Durant, Phil Stearns, Ed Bear, Lea Bertucci, Leah Wechsler, Dr. Bleep, Steak and Christopher McDonald.
